Prefixes are used in the metric system to indicate multiplication by a factor of 10. For example, the prefix kilo in kilometers indicates a multiplier of 1000, 34 kilometers is equivalent to 34,000 meters. In general numbers should be kept within range of 0.1 to 1000. Prefixes can be used with the units to allow numbers within this range. Some commonly used prefixes are listed in the following table. ![]() ![]() |
