Identification of Bacteria


  1. Microscopically
    • Shape
    • Stain which they absorb
    • Arrangement
      singular, pairs, clusters, chains
      some have flagella
      Escherichia coil - a gram negative, nonspore forming bacillus which ferments lactose at 44°C within 48 hours (see figure 1).


  2. Macroscopically (grown on artificial media)
    • shappe and characteristics of colony
    • differential media


Normal Bacterial Flora
  • soil, water, animals, birds


Intestinal Normal Flora
  • coliform group - total coliforms, fecal coliforms, escherichia coli
  • fecal streptococci
  • Clostridium
  • Pathogenic bacteria spread via the water route
    • salmonella - dysentery, typhoid fever, typhoid
    • shigella - dysentery
    • vibrio cholera - cholera


Opportunistic Pathogens
  • pseudomonas, aeromonas, legionella
