WATER PLANT OPERATOR TRAINING PROGRAM

Turbidity (NTU)

Definition: anything which intereferes with the passage of light through a sample of water.

An optical property

Units of measurement NTU (Nephelometric Turbidity Units)

A good turbidimeter is a nephelometer - measures scattered light.

Current MOW objective < NTU

Why are we interested in turbidity?
1. Relationship with disinfection.
2. Quick analysis and continuous analysis.
3. A good measurement of the working effectiveness of a WTP.

How can we reduce turbidity?
1. Coagulation, Flocculation and Sedimentation.
2. Filtration

Turbidity Measurement Techniques
Grab Samples
  • keep cells clean and unscratched, no finger prints
  • mark each cell and insert in the sample chamber with same orientation
  • a thin, uniform layer of silicone oil applied to cell to minimize effect of scratches
  • air bubbles? degass with rubber stopper and syringe

    Calibration
  • calibrate with or against known standards
