DISINFECTION
[3 DAYS INSTRUCTION]
COURSE OVERVIEW
To provide operators of water treatment and water distribution systems with the understanding of the various processes available for the disinfection of potable water.

COURSE OUTLINE
Destroying pathogens in water (introduction / overview, disinfection by inactivation, chemical disinfection methods – chloramination, chemical disinfection methods – ozone, chemical disinfection methods – ultraviolet light, chemical disinfection methods – chlorination, chemical disinfection methods – chlorine dioxide generation, factors that affect chemical disinfection, chemical disinfection by-products (DBPs)).
Physical disinfection (process of filtration, filtration technologies, monitoring granular filter performance, granular filter problems, troubleshooting granular filter problems, membrane filtration, particle counting).
Chlorination equipment (gas chlorination facilities, hypochlorination facilities, facilities for other oxidants, chlorine safety).
Disinfection chemical feed calculations.
Procedure for disinfection of drinking water in Ontario.
Appendices (glossary, disinfection test).
