LAGOON SYSTEMS

COURSE OVERVIEW
This course provides guidance to wastewater operators on the recommended procedures and practices for operating lagoon systems. Lagoons are especially well suited to small communities because they can can cost less to construct, operate, and are simpler to maintain than other systems.

COURSE OUTLINE
General: overview, expected benefits, risks.
Work Description: fundamentals, types, design, performance, monitoring
Design and Operation Considerations: facilities, instrumentation, equipment, types of pond operations, handling excess flows, total suspended solids, BOD, seasonal operations, maintenance of lagoons, monitoring of lagoons.
Lagoon Microbiology: bacteria, organisms, protozoans.
Nitrification Basics: the nitrogen cycle.
Applications and Limitations.
Troubleshooting Lagoon systems: the critical 5, common lagoon problems.
Appendices: fact sheets, provincial policy statement, technical briefs.
